Church History

St. Paul, known as "the friendly church on the corner" was founded in August 1867 and was initially located on Henderson Mill Road in Swedesboro. Thereafter, Rev. Benjamin Fernanders and his congregation moved the church to Church Street in Swedesboro near the railroad where Del Monte's warehouse now stands. The congregation worshipped there for a few years before purchasing the lot where the present edifice now stands.

The church Officers at that time, Bro. Paul Bland and Bro. William Blake purchased the property from Gounsboro Richardson, after whose family Richardson Avenue was named. They hired African-American carpenters by the name of Maine from Philadelphia, Pa., to build the church.

In 2008, St. Paul will celebrate 141 years in His service. We thank God for how He is growing St. Paul. We have a unique congregation that is over 50% young adults who are on fire for the Lord. God is sending us the stressed out, the beaten down, the forgotten, the hopeless and they are becoming strong, faithful family members of the body of Christ. The Lord is doing magnificent work at St. Paul for we are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. From our youths -to our young adults - to our senior members - we are a church that rejoices in the Lord always. Our Church Motto is "Breaking Down Walls While Building Up People". No matter how old you are strongholds are being destroyed at St. Paul for we know that Christ is our strong tower. To God be the glory for all He has done, is doing and will do.
